Fashion Flashback Friday – Meghan’s Coats Part 2: Wrap Coats

November 20, 2020 by Rachel Burchfield and Susan Courter 1 Comment

It’s Fashion Flashback Friday and our series continues with Meghan’s Coats Part 2 – Wrap coats. Today we will be taking a closer look at Meghan’s wrap coat choices that she has worn for Royal engagements as well as in her life before joining the Royal Family.

Wrap coats are certainly a look the Duchess of Sussex prefers – so much so that she chose this style of coat for her engagement announcement with Prince Harry, which is quickly approaching its third anniversary on November 27. The white Line ‘Mara’ coat she wore for the couple’s photocall at The Sunken Garden on the grounds of Kensington Palace quickly sold out. This was one of the first but certainly not the last times that we saw the “Meghan Effect” — the phenomenon of products selling out after being seen on the Duchess of Sussex.

Designed in double-face wool, the Mara or Meghan Wrap Coat by Line is simply stunning and perfect for the holidays or any wintery occasion. The coat is available in all sizes through the brand’s Canadian website – linethelabel.com, ($799 CAN). We also found a few in stock at Stylefav, $610.

Meghan wore the same style coat from the brand in black, November 2016.

Here are some other options we found to “get the look”.

From ASOS, the belted formal coat in cream by Next Look, reg. $67.00 on sale $50.25 (-25%). ASOS is currently offering an additional 20% off when you spend $50 – use code: ASOSNEWTREAT. On the right, the Lauren Ralph Lauren wool blend wrap coat, $400.

The Cole Haan Belted Wrap Coat in black, reg. $420 on sale now at Macy’s, $168 (60% OFF) until 11/28. The coat is also available in bone.

For her first Christmas with the Royal Family, which was obviously a high-profile occasion, Meghan wore a camel color wool wrap coat by Sentaler. The Duchess became familiar with the Canadian brand while shooting the television show Suits in Toronto.

The coat has a long wide collar and is tailored in baby Alpaca ($1184) creating a very soft, warm coat that is also lightweight. It comes in a variety of colors including Army Green ($1184), which Meghan wore in Toronto, December 2016 and a red version ($1184) that she wore in January 2019 when visiting Birkenhead, UK.

The Duchess wore two other wrap styles from Sentaler including a black hooded version of the long wrap coat ($1371) in March 2017 and a midnight blue boucle version ($1371) in November 2019 for Festival of Remembrance services.

Another similar look to the Sentaler coats is the MAI double-face wool coat with waterfall collar from Mackage ($790), (another Duchess favorite) worn in March 2018 when the couple made a surprise visit to Belfast, Ireland.

The Mai coat is available in sand, black or toffee color, starting at $750-$790. The toffee color is a nice alternative for the Massimo Dutti coat seen below.

Meghan certainly favors camel color wool coats. She was spotted wearing this MaxMara ‘Manuela’ wrap coat, $2950 in March 2015 as well as other numerous occassions.

When the Duke and Duchess made a surprise visit to local army families in Windsor, November 2019, Meghan wore a toffee colored wrap coat by Massimo Dutti.

She wore another similar style coat by Massimo Dutti in January 2020 while on a private visit to the National Theatre in London as well as a visit to the Mayhew animal home, of which she is Royal Patron to both.

In March 2020 the couple attended a private lunch at the Goring Hotel in London and Meghan was spotted wearing a camel wrap coat by London-based, Alex Eagle (£1,325).

This belted full-length wrap coat has a shawl collar and is crafted from Italian baby camel hair and Loro Piana wool. The streamline silhouette with a built-in tie to cinch your waist makes this coat incredibly flattering.

Shop the look with these alternative options —

From J. Crew – the Wrap coat in Italian wool-cashmere comes in red or camel color and is a great #MatchMegStyle for the Sentaler or Alex Eagle coats. The wool cashmere coats retail for $398, however both are on sale currently for $279.50 (29% Off)!

The first two images below show the Zara belted wool blend coat, $219 followed by the double collar wool blend coat from Chico’s, $249 (receive 25% Off when you use Code 84778).

This H&M tie-belt coat is available in camel, charcoal grey or black, $60.

Another popular coat the Duchess wore in March 2018, was this one by J. Crew – the tipped wrap coat in Italian stadium-cloth wool. Sadly the coat is no longer available and we haven’t yet found any similar styles.

For a visit to Cardiff, UK in January 2018 Meghan wore this Stella McCartney black tie front coat. She wore the coat again in November 2018 for Festival of Remembrance at Royal Albert Hall.

When Meghan visited the Royal Variety Home in December 2018, she wore a long grey wrap coat by Soia & Kyo — the Adelaida Wool-Blend Wrap Coat, reg. $550 now on sale at Off 5th, $400.

Finally, when the couple arrived in South Africa to start their tour in the September 2019, Meghan was spotted wearing a Cuyana Wool Cashmere Short Wrap Coat, $295.

The coat is also available in black and is a nice #MatchMegStyle for her Line ‘Meghan’ coat as shown above.

We hope you are enjoying our coat series. Please check back for Fashion Flashback Friday Coats Part 3 when we take a closer look at some other styles Meghan has worn.

It’s obvious how much she favors this style, but I don’t think it’s actually the most flattering for her. In general, it adds quite a bit of bulk to her frame, particularly around the waist, making her look a lot larger than she is. They also seem to engulf her, like she’s trying to perpetually hide, especially given her petite build. Out of the ones shown, though, I’d say I dislike the toffee colored Massimo Dutti the most, as the color doesn’t flatter her skin tone and makes her look sallow.

Please note: While OneOff shows that Meghan is wearing a Ralph Lauren Oxford shirt from the Polo collection, it's not the one they show from Ralph Lauren. Her white shirt has hidden buttons and does not have a logo on it.
Also the hair clip Meghan is wearing is not from Crown Affair. We took a closer look and noticed that the one that OneOff shows does not match that of the one Meghan is wearing.

It was a reminder that the conversation Meghan is leading through Archewell is not just reaching families, but heads of state and policymakers on a global scale.
