Meghan Stuns in Red Dress by Nigerian Designer Orire for Women in Leadership Panel

May 11, 2024 by Susan Courter 19 Comments

Meghan took center stage at a Women in Leadership panel held in Nigeria. Co-hosted with Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director-General of the World Trade Organization, the event aimed to underscore the significance of female leadership in driving positive change worldwide.

Dressed in a vibrant red maxi dress adorned with delicate ruffles and subtle straps, Meghan exuded confidence and sophistication. She paired the dress with understated accessories—a diamond tennis necklace, her gold bracelets, and nude sandals. Meghan’s ensemble captured attention while allowing her message to shine through.

Meghan explained her choice of the red dress — as it turns out, she was using color to get closer to her Nigerian heritage.

The panel discussion, moderated by Nigerian media mogul Mo Abudu, provided a platform for Meghan to share her insights on various topics, from discovering her Nigerian heritage to the importance of representation in leadership roles. Meghan’s revelation about her heritage resonated deeply with the audience, highlighting the transformative power of self-discovery and connection to one’s roots.

As the discussion delved into the role of women in power, Meghan emphasized the impact of representation, stressing the importance of being a familiar face for the next generation. Her words echoed a commitment to breaking barriers and inspiring young women to pursue their dreams, regardless of societal norms or expectations.

Drawing from her own experiences and mentorship, Meghan spoke candidly about the evolving nature of work-life balance and the joys of motherhood. Her reflections on navigating various roles—woman, mother, leader—underscored the complexity of modern life and the importance of embracing change with grace and resilience.

Meghan’s presence at the Women in Leadership panel marked not just a moment of advocacy, but a celebration of diversity, empowerment, and possibility. As she continues to champion causes close to her heart, Meghan serves as an inspiration to women worldwide, reminding us all of the transformative power of authenticity, compassion, and leadership.

And now, what Meghan wore for the event.

Meghan wore a dress from Lago, Nigeria brand, Oríré — the Dire dress in orange, $415.

The owner and designer, Orire Aleshinloye, who holds a Masters in Fashion Business Creation from The British School of Fashion in London, is Nigerian and spent her childhood in the Republic of Benin.

Her shoes are the Aquazzura ‘So Nude’ sandal 105 in pink, $750, which she wore earlier today.

Meghan wore her Kimai Semi Hoop Earrings, $795 per earring—$1590 for a pair. She first wore the earrings during the Invictus Games, Germany, November 2023.

The Duchess also wore her Logan Hollowell, ‘Baby Reverse Water Drop’ diamond tennis necklace, $15,600. She first wore the necklace back in February while the couple here in Vancouver.

Once again, Meghan had on the same bracelets from earlier today – Ariel Gordon ‘Hex’ bracelet and her Lorraine Schwartz, the Against Evil Eye Five Eye Diamond Pave Bracelet, $18,500 — her staple pieces, Diana’s gold Cartier Tank watch and Cartier ‘Love’ bracelet and the unidentified beaded bangle.

There was one additional bracelet that she brought back today—her Shaun Leane ‘Sabre’ bangle in yellow gold vermeil & diamond pavé, $1790*. She first wore the piece back in 2018.

*Note – the bracelet was previously named the Signature Tusk bangle.

We’ll be back tomorrow for the couple’s final day of engagements:

A basketball clinic with Giants of Africa, a polo fundraiser for Nigeria: Unconquered and a cultural reception.

I love this dress, with its eye-popping color and those beautiful ruffles at the hem. It looks gorgeous on her and somehow looks even more beautiful when she’s sitting down.

But I can’t help noticing that all the other woman at the event are dressed more modestly. They have long sleeves and are showing no skin at all. Meghan appears to be the only one in spaghetti straps. Throughout the whole tour I’ve been wondering about the disconnect between what she’s wearing and what the women in the host country are wearing. I love Meghan’s choices individually, but I’m starting to wonder if they are appropriate for the context of these events.

Ma dear those women are dressed in nigerian attire meghan is not and has never been there. Don’t expect her to dress to the cultural normal. She did that too in germany. And she is not blamed for her dresscode unless u are looling for negativity. The heat there is extremely hot compared to where she is.

I am a Nigerian lady, and I think that her dressing throughout the trip, apart from when she wore the white suit, has been completely inappropriate for the standards of my country, It is really disappointing considering the position that she is in as a woman. She has been dressing as if she is going to a beach resort.

I find that very interesting. Might I ask respectfully whether that is based on there being a significant number of Muslim citizens in Nigeria? I see some other women dressed like her, which seems very “American” to me, but I don’t know if these are Nigerian ladies or people with M&H. She definitely has been trending for some time to showing a lot of skin but it does not seem risque or revealing to me. Thank you.

Well, I’m a Nigerian and I don’t know what Ada means by inappropriate and disappointing. And to answer your question, those ladies you noticed are Nigerians. And that’s how the average Nigerian lady dresses. Even those women putting on Nigerian attires wouldn’t dress that way on a normal day. It’s usually for special occasions or for religious activities. Otherwise, the average Nigerian lady dresses exactly like Meghan. Not one single thing wrong with her outfits.

It may also be considered that it was 30 degrees hotter in Nigeria than in Montecito, so the sundress styles may be Meghan’s “hot weather” dressing. Thank you, Yinka, for your input.

Yay! Colour finally! Dont get me wrong I love that Meghan is one of those woman who can wear nude or white or black without it bleaching them out but she also can wear colour really well including this dress. Love that she went to a Nigerian brand which is some very RF to do. Love the dress, sitting down the ruffles don’t look to bad and this is a dress that seems to actually fit so kudos on that. Only thing is her hair-I just wish sometimes she would wear her hair loose, the tightness of these buns gives me a headache looking at them. Props to her for doing eight nine hour days in them but ouch! she’s got great hair I just wish sometimes she would show it off.

Great coverage as always from you Susan!

I also do not like her tight hair pull-backs. The loose hair on day 1 was just gorgeous.

Absolutely stunning. The color is fantastic on her. I especially love the unique hem that looks lovely when she’s standing, but really pops while she’s seated. Perfect for this type of event. I finally managed to get on the ORÍRÉ website and there are so many pieces I would love to see Meghan wear in the future. Fingers crossed.

Oh, she looks so wonderful!! I just love those special ruffles. As far as her jewelry, I wish I could just sit with it for an hour. The best is that she is welcome.
