Meghan Joins Kate and Pippa at Wimbledon Ladies’ Championship Final – UPDATED

The Duchess of Sussex joined the Duchess of Cambridge and Pippa Matthews for today’s Ladies’ Singles Final at The Championships, Wimbledon.

Kate, who is Patron of the All England Lawn and Tennis and Croquet Club, arrived ahead of Meghan for a lunch with members and to spend time with players ahead of the match.

The Duchesses attended the Ladies’ Singles Final together last year as well.

Below, Kate, Meghan and Pippa Matthews chat before today’s match got underway.

Meghan attended today’s finals to support her friend, number 11 seed Serena Williams of the US. Her opponent today was number 7 seed Simona Halep of Romania.

Meghan made a surprise appearance on Day 4 of this year’s Championships; she was there with close friends Genevieve Hillis and Lindsay Roth to watch Serena play.

It looked like the royals enjoyed today’s match.

Ahead of the match today, Wimbledon posted a historic video clip from 60 years ago this week. It features Maria Bueno, the only South American to win the Ladies’ Singles Championship. In the video, you will see also Princess Marina, Duchess of Kent presenting Ms. Bueno with the trophy.

This is Mr. Brook’s last year as chairman, after nine years in the position. Serena Williams has been vocal in describing her fondness for the chairman. More from this Daily Express piece:

Like, he’ll pass my practice court and has this great big smile on his face. He really makes me feel welcome every year. He is always smiling.

I literally will be on the court and I swear I see him smiling. That is such a good moment and memory to have of Philip. I didn’t know it was his last year. So it’s sad. He just really made my Wimbledon experience.

The match was off to a quick start with Simona Halep taking the opening set 6-2.

The match was over quickly with Halep finishing as the winner, 6-2 in the second set.

After today’s loss, Serena was gracious in speaking about her opponent.

Here is something fun Susan Courter caught this morning on ESPN’s Breakfast at Wimbledon. The show featured Chris Fava, a Wimbledon superfan. Each year Mr. Fava heads to the Championships sporting Wimbledon-themed outfits that he creates. He has now become quite the fan-favorite as well as a media sensation.

Chris Fava as Centre Court Man – Wimbledon 2019 more from the Evening Standard:

“I had this vision of sitting on Centre Court with a white line going straight from my middle and over my face, so that was the initial inspiration,” Mr.  Fava said.

“I wanted it to look in a way couture, or “court-oure”. So I wanted it to be high fashion, silly but really cool and eye catching.”

Below, Chris in this year’s costume on the Wimbledon homepage.

The outfit took four months to create; he says it takes about an hour to put it on each day.

Chris has been attending Wimbledon in an array of outfits since 2013. However, it was his 2017 “Strawberry Man” ensemble that threw him into the spotlight.

The costume is now a part of the Wimbledon museum alongside items from champions like Serena Williams and Andy Murray.

For 2018, Chris created “Trophy Man” and it was brilliant in all it’s shining detail! He says this is his favorite costume thus far.

* * SOOOOPRISE!! What a dream come true! The Tennis Channel followed me around a couple months leading up to Wimbledon this year to get the scoop on what it’s like being StrawberryMan. What a ride this has been! Who knew what would transpire after that random day at the costume store in 2013. Many lessons learned these past 7 years. Most notably to push through any fears and do it regardless. Oh the stories I can tell!! Now to what Meghan wore for today’s match.

Her skirt is by BOSS, the brand’s Vesplisa Pleated Skirt ($375).

Crafted of 100% polyester, its most striking detail is the abstract blue and black brushstroke motif. The midi-length piece is high-waisted with a concealed side zipper. It is available at Harvey Nichols ($375) and also in stock at Saks ($545). Thank you to Michelle of MF Fashion & Styling Perth for this ID!

UPDATE: Meghan’s button-down white shirt was a repeat wear. The shirt is from Givenchy and was first seen at the Endeavour Awards in February.

Below, right, is a similar style shirt from the brand – the oversized long-sleeve shirt in cotton ($1040), currently on sale at Farfetch for $416; there are only limited sizes left.

It appears that Meghan may be wearing her Manolo Blahnik BB pumps from the video clips of her arriving at Wimbledon. The shoes are available at the following online sites: Nordstrom in select sizes, $625 / Neiman Marcus, All sizes, $665 / Selfridges in select sizes, $540.

Another new item the Duchess carried today was a bag by Stella McCartney. The style is the Grace clutch. It is white embossed faux-leather with a goldtone braideded chain handle. The piece is not currently available.

Meghan also brought back her Pippa Small Durga Ring ($1190).

She wore her Jennifer Meyer 18-karat gold turquoise earrings ($395). This is a pair we first saw at the London Series baseball game back in June.

Another repeat item we saw on Meghan today was her Le Specs Bandwagon sunglasses ($69), first worn in Fraser Island on the Australia Tour. The black tort color Meghan is wearing is not currently available. The style is available in a black matte and a number of other colors. Amazon offers the black matte for $64.95.

We have a couple of quick shopping updates to share today. The first is a reminder about the annual Nordstrom Anniversary Sale.

One reason the sale is so popular is that the merchandise is new-season goods, not what is left of a previous season’s collection. Once the Anniversary Sale ends, the prices go back up. This is the Those with a Nordstrom card can access the sale beginning now through the 18th of July.

For those who are not members, the All-Access sale starts July 19th, running through August 4th.

A reminder for savvy shoppers, Amazon’s annual Prime Day (now expanded to two days) with the associated sale pricing and promotions is next Monday/Tuesday, 15 & 16 July.

If thinking about shopping, the NY Times has a good piece titled 5 Things to Avoid on Amazon Prime Day.

One part of the sale generating the biggest buzz: the launch of Lady Gaga’s Haus Laboratories cosmetics line. In social media posts, the entertainer spoke about the line’s origins.

When I was young, I never felt beautiful. And as I struggled to find a sense of both inner and outer beauty, I discovered the power of makeup.

I remember watching my mother put her makeup on every morning, basking in the glow of her power to put on her bravest face as the hard working woman she was.

It was then that I invented Lady Gaga. I found the superhero within me by looking in the mirror and seeing who I wanted to be.

The “cruelty-free, vegan gems feature a prism design which speaks to how multi-faceted we are as humans.” The Amazon Prime sale starts at 12 a.m. PST on Monday, July 15, through 11:59 p.m. PST on Tuesday, July 16 (while supplies last).

We’ll continue to update the post on today’s events and the upcoming sales.

We’ll leave you with these two fun photos from “Tennis Past”.

  1. Meghan is an intelligent, worldy, and fashion savvy woman. I have the impression that this ensemble is very much a tongue-in-cheek nod to her outfit on last year’s outing with Kate. At that time she was criticized for looking like a “linesman” in her blue and white oversized striped shirt, long white wide legged pants, and a trilby.
This year is a repeat of the colours and a bit of the style. Sightly oversized white shirt and the blue and white pleated skirt – which were definitely not made for each other. But, the cut of the shirt does nod back to the blue and white stripe version, as does the pattern in the skirt, and all with few complaints about her choice of ensemble.
I wonder if Meghan set out to get one over on the negativity surrounding last year’s choices by choosing a similar men’s cut shirt and identical colour scheme? That would be royally intriguing indeed. A Duchess with a fashion sense and a robust sense of irony.

  2. One of the best outfits of Meghan, one in which she looks pretty comfortable and at ease. She pulls it out beautifully and has accessorized it very successfully! Perfect summery combination of outfit and fit for the event!

    note: admin edit

  3. The Duchess looked lovely, but I am not a fan of the skirt personal preference only, the crisp white shirt looks terrific. She can wear her hair like that and it looks gorgeous on he, it really shows off her beautiful face.

  4. Meghan really is at the top of her game with this outfit, that superb and bold Hugo Boss brush stroke motif on white has a total sporting vibe. That skirt such a funky item with its black waistband and sunray pleats, unusual in every way, yet well within a classic style palette. Well judged by Meghan.

I like how she’s teamed it with a shirt blouse, too, something I wouldn’t choose with a skirt, but which is a great pick for a braver stylista than me. Her hair too looks amazing swept back into that smooth ponytail, she always looks wonderful with her hair sleek over the crown of her head, showcasing her classic good looks. The turquoise earrings are divine, just the neatest pop of colour up top countering those bold blues in the skirt below.

The mismatched accessories of white bag and black pumps are spot on too, adding to the feel of an eclectic mix of elements which nonetheless gel into a sassy whole. That little McCartney bag is to die for. It’s just so sweet the Duchesses hit on a dual appearance for Wimbledon again, and icing on the cake to have Pippa come along too.

  5. I like the skirt it is really interesting and summery i would of chosen a blue/black shirt instead of the white!I like her hair shades and shoes and it was nice to see the ladies all out together.

  6. Usually, I prefer Kate’s style to Meghan’s. But in this case, I actually like Meghan’s outfit better. Meghan’s skirt is pretty and seems more appropriate for a tennis match, in my opinion. However, I would have paired it with a knit top, rather than a button-down shirt. Blue would have gone well and highlighted the blue brushstrokes in the skirt. Also, I love those turquoise earrings! They are so unique.

  7. This is a much better look for Wimbledon than the skinny jeans worn last week, Royal Box or not. The skirt is beautiful and for someone like Meghan who loves neutrals, sticking to white for Wimbledon is always a good move. Lovely to see Meghan so often even though she is still on maternity leave, a shame her friend Serena wasn’t victorious this time!

  8. I love that gorgeous skirt, but not the white blouse with it. I think each element is just fine, but the combination of that dreamy floaty skirt and the bright white, bulky shirt with the rolled-up sleeves just didn’t mesh for me. The skirt needed something more streamlined to match. Overall, though, she looked fresh, crisp and ready for tennis. So nice to see both Duchesses out together, and how adorable is Pippa, in her cute frilly dress and braided ponytail? Very fun to see the three ladies out so we get a triple dose of fashion 🙂

  9. Love the white shirt! I wish I could wear it as well as she does. This look reminds me of Carolina Herrera, however it doesn’t quite match with the skirt. She looks absolutely gorgeous though and that glow!!

    • Amanda – I thought the same thing – Herrera! I didn’t mind the whites not matching exactly. TV screens, computer monitors and all can throw off the colors a bit. It may have looked different in person. Susan C

  10. Re the videoclip from the AELTC club, I’d like to correct an error that I may have inadvertently contributed to. The man standing behind the Duchess of Kent is not her son. In 1959 her son was 24 years old. The man in the picture is an official of the club, possibly the chairman. But 1959 was a dramatic year for the position of chairman with the incumbent dying in office, so I haven’t been able to find the name of the new chairman. Can anyone help? In any case, the video is of the Duchess presenting the trophy on her own.

    • Hi Maureen, Thanks once again! That’s what happens when I don’t restart my laptop to listen to all the video clips and I’m cross-eyed from being up too early. Appreciate your pointing this out and help with it. I will edit the post and remove the Duke of Kent. It is interesting learning all the history of the club. Wimbledon is my favorite tournament/time of year. I’m going to go through withdrawal after tomorrow until the US Open starts in August. – Susan C.

  11. You cant go wrong in a crisp white shirt. Its a great wardobe staple and Meghan looks great today. Nice to see the Duchesses out! 🎾

  12. On a side note, I notice the word “unkempt” used to describe this outfit (and others that Meghan has worn). That word strikes me as completely out of place.

For reference, I looked it up and the definition of the adjective “unkempt” is:(especially of a person) having an untidy or disheveled appearance.
    “they were unwashed and unkempt”
    synonyms: untidy, messy, scruffy, disordered, disheveled, disarranged, rumpled, windblown, ungroomed, bedraggled, in a mess, messed up, shabby, slovenly, shaggy;

I fail to see how this outfit fits that description in any possible way. The blouse ‘blousing’ looks unkempt?? How?

I apologize for the negative comment, and to give the benefit of the doubt, maybe people define “unkempt” differently. But I fail to see how a crisp white blouse tucked into a pleated skirt with a sleek pony tail even approaches “unkempt” territory.

    • LAYLEAH, giving them the benefit of the doubt, they might be mistaking the word “unkept” for “not looking put together”. It that’s the case, they will hopefully see your comment.

  13. All of the individual components in this outfit are beautiful. However, the shirt and skirt combination seem to result in a choppy, unflattering look. I agree with many others – this outfit would be much better with a simple blue fitted top.

  14. I love Meghan’s take on Wimbleton white! What a gorgeous skirt with that abstract print. Keeping the rest of the styling simple and sleek looks chic, crisp and modern.

  15. This will be an unpopular comment–but does this woman have a stylist? IMHO–she likes expensive items but doesn’t look “put together” very well. Loved Pippa’s dress while DOC dress was lovely but a little tight.

    • I’m inclined to agree that Meghan is a little less tailored; a little more “off the rack” to me. I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing (for me, Kate’s a little overly tailored a lot–a little too costume-y or gimmick-y, although I recognize that’s part of her gig), but maybe she could use a bit more polish here and there. It’s a tough line to walk between “polished-but-effortless” and “humorless/overdone”–I think it comes with practice and experience for most. She might just need a few more years under the international press lens to get her groove. And let’s be fair–it is hard to get things right *especially* during and after pregnancy because your hormones (and your sleep!) change every 2 seconds, which in turn affects your body shape. It’s also not just weight gain and loss but also body composition and proportion that can change. Personally, I’m amazed she ventured out in public wearing white when she’s got a newborn at home!

  16. I don’t really have any issues with this look but at the same time I think it’s a bit too much white. I think a navy or black fitted top would have worked better here. The gorgeous pleated skirt should be the focal point of the outfit and I feel like the mismatched white from the blouse takes away from that a little bit. I do hope Meghan decides to wear this skirt again as I’d love to see it styled differently.

    • I agree with a bit too much white. A navy top would have really worked here. I always find it hard to outfit a lighter skirt colour with a top. I would have gone with a cap sleeve navy blouse tucked in. Or perhaps something unexpected? Like a pop of colour? Like a yellow or coral blouse? Any thoughts ? In any case it is a lovely outfit , better than the skinny jeans for this sporting event.

  17. Looks amazing, love the skirt with the pleats and interesting print. Team with a crisp white shirt and killer heels makes this outfit look fabulous. Have seen quite a few of similiar skirts in shops but with varying prices. Super stunning look and fabulous event, I am a huge tennis fan

  18. I’m going to be a dissenter, I really don’t think this look suits her at all. It emphasises her short waisted-ness. A darker top would have been better.

    note: admin edit

  19. I like Meghan’s choice of white for Wimbledon, and the summery feel of her outfit. The skirt is quite striking and I hope we see it again, perhaps with a different top. I, too, think the whites do not work together and would have loved to see the blue or black in the skirt design brought out instead. I also feel like the purse is in the category of tiny purses and don’t understand the choice of ivory, either. And a stronger earring since her hair was pulled back would have been nice. But overall Meghan looks beautiful and I marvel at the radiant glow that she exudes pretty much whenever we see her.

It was truly wonderful to see these three women who have lifestyles and babies in common clearly enjoying each others’ company and showing the world what female camaraderie looks like (and supporting good friend Serena). Meghan was wearing a ring by Pippa Small and was sitting next to Pippa . . . was that a coincidence? I am aware that we will never know, just thought that was sort of endearing.

  20. This is a beautiful skirt, and the DoS looks beautiful in it. She looks happy, healthy, and like she’s really enjoying the company of the Middleton women while watching her close friend do what she does best. (So sorry Serena didn’t win! Argh!)

I have just a couple of minor notes: noticed, as some others did, that the whites don’t quite match–probably not so much because they’re actual different colors (I think they’re both just dead white) as that they’re different fabrics, and so they’re catching the light differently. A tough one to avoid–though a black or blue top might have worked better. Also, I think a fuller hairstyle might have balanced out the volume of the skirt better, especially since it seems like it was a perfect summer day and not hot.

I love the DoC’s look and commented on it on WKW. Pippa’s dress is adorable.

Thanks for the pics of the Wimbledon superfans! So fun. I didn’t know anything about this tradition. I’m so there for the Trophy Man costume.

  21. Meaghan looked sumptuous, healthy and confident. She takes fashion to another level. Stand out look Meaghan. Well done.

  22. I do like this skirt with the knife pleats and cool design. I don’t like this shirt paired with it. The whites aren’t the same, the feel is off with the shirt being more sporty and the skirt more dressy. A knit top that matched the ivory of the skirt would have worked better. She looked happy and what amazing sport! Fun outing!

  23. I think with a sleeker top, the outfit would work better. But the bunching is the shirt makes it look unkempt at times.

  24. I love a white shirt, in fact, I have an entire inspiration board dedicated to the white shirt. White shirt as formal wear, white for date night, white shirt for work, white shirt for girls night out, white shirt for casual wear and certainly white shirt for an elegant day out! This outfit fits into the “ white shirt for an elegant day out”. The skirt is simply beautiful and adds the drama that some may perceive a “simple” white shirt as lacking. The accessories only add to the over all effect. A minor thought is that at times I like a single strand of pearls ( real or otherwise) with my white shirt, but then Meghan was glowing enough that she did not need the pearls! Just beautiful

  25. I thought she looked amazing. I often feel like her clothes just don’t fit, but no complaint there this time. I really loved this outfit. Skirt was so interesting!

  26. I think the clashing whites do a disservice to the shirt, make it look unkempt and not a $1000 Givenchy. A navy button down worn untucked with a cute leather tie belt would have been great.

    note: admin edit

  27. I LOVE Hugo Boss! I’ve been waiting for the Duchess to wear the brand. The skirt is beautiful & the entire look is very crisp on a post-pregnancy body. I can see her wearing it again in the future since as a separate in can be mixed & matched in so many ways. She looks perfect head to toe.
(And thanks for the look at Chris Fava – how fun.)

    • Ellen, Meghan has wore Hugo Boss several times now. If you do a keyword search on our homepage you will be able to find all the posts when she wore the brand and the items.

      Thanks! Susan C.

  28. Meghan’s pleated skirt is interesting with its abstract swirls of black and blue. If I were to wear this skirt, I’d chose a royal blue top to go with it, or perhaps a black top. However, Meghan’s choice of a white shirt is certainly okay and perhaps she was rocking the Wimbledon white. I like her pony tail. She is dressed appropriately and comfortably for this event.

  29. You may want to correct the caption on the historic 60 year film. It is not HM and Prince Philip presenting the trophy to Ms. Bueno, but Princess Marina, Duchess of Kent. She was the president of the Wimbledon All English Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club for 26 years and her son, the current Duke of Kent has held that position since her death, I believe

    • Thanks to all those that pointed out the error on the video clip. The audio on my laptop is not currently working correctly and I missed that! Much appreciated. I believe I have it correct now. Thanks, Susan C.
