Meghan Goes Monochromatic in Victor Glemaud to Kick Off U.K. Black History Month with Harry

October 1, 2020 by Rachel Burchfield and Susan Courter 10 Comments

Even an ocean away, Meghan and Harry made time today to celebrate the kickoff of the U.K.’s Black History Month with both an on-camera interview and an article with the Evening Standard.

Evening Standard Twitter

This marks the second time in nine days the Sussexes have been on camera together – and the only two times they’ve been seen together on camera since their abrupt departure from the Royal Family in January. This also marks their first U.K. interview since their split from the Firm.

For the appearance, Meghan wore one of her favorite fashion trends – a monochromatic look – in shades of brown. Her camel-colored, long-sleeved asymmetrical top is the “Slash Long Sleeve Top” from Victor Glemaud, which she paired with brown leather pants and her hair in a tight bun.

The couple sat on a beige sofa in front of three birds’ nest photos in their Santa Barbara home. The Nest Studies prints are by Californian Barloga Studios and retail at $360 apiece. Also spotted in the background was a blanket ladder and blue and white striped couch pillows.

The interview opens with Meghan giving an update on she and Harry’s 17-month-old son Archie, saying that Archie “is so good. We are very lucky with our little one. He is just so busy – he is all over the place. He keeps us on our toes. We are just so lucky.”

Evening Standard Twitter

The conversation took a more sobering turn when the Sussexes said that young people of color will be held back as long as structural racism exists in both the U.K. and around the world.

Harry addressed his white privilege and said that his awareness of that has been about learning – and he encouraged all others to do their own reckoning within themselves.

Meghan acknowledged that this reckoning can be uncomfortable.

“When there is just peaceful protest and when there is the intention of just wanting community and just wanting the recognition of equality, then that is a beautiful thing,” the Duchess said. “While it has been challenging for a lot of people certainly having to make this reckoning of historical significance that has got people to the place that they are, that is uncomfortable for people. We recognize that. It is uncomfortable for us.”

She continued —

“We have all had to adapt to how we can have the most impact as possible within the constraints of what has happened with COVID-19. Like all of you, we are doing the best that we can and hoping that our passion and our commitment is still felt, as it certainly hasn’t wavered.”

And, in one of the talk’s lighter moments, the couple’s beagle Guy couldn’t be outdone by their other pup Pula, who made an appearance in the background of Harry and Meghan’s TIME100 interview last week – Guy jumped right up on the sofa and joined his mom and dad for the emotionally-charged chat.

Evening Standard Twitter

Alongside the pair’s interview with the Evening Standard, the couple also penned an article for the outlet where they said, in part —

“For as long as structural racism exists, there will be generations of young people of colour who do not start their lives with the same equality of opportunity as their white peers. And for as long as that continues, untapped potential will never get to be realized.”

Meghan said that at the root of movements like the U.S.’ Black Lives Matter should be less controversial and more about “really just about reminding people of your worth,” she said.

“And if we just focus on the uplift and the positivity of that while still acknowledging the past, that’s when we reshape things and that shouldn’t be inflammatory at all,” the Duchess continued. “That should be really exciting, actually.”

And now, the What Meghan Wore fashion recap —

Evening Standard Twitter

The Duchess wore a camel colored top by Victor Glemaud. It is the Slash Long Sleeve Top, $375.

The assymetrical top is 100% merino wool. The site is currently taking pre-orders for the piece.

Meghan had on a pair of what appear to be faux leather trousers in a cognac brown color. We’re thinking that the pants could be from Aritzia, a brand the Duchess favors. The style is the Wilfred High Tied Pant with belt in Cinnamon Brown vegan leather, $148.

We’re also thinking this was the same style Meghan wore for her America’s Got Talent video message appearance in black. You can just see the stitching on the pockets of the pair Meghan is wearing which is a good match to the stitching on the Aritzia pair.

Meghan did not appear to be wearing a necklace and we were unable to notice any earrings in the video interview. Check back for updates!

BONUS! About Meghan’s Home Decor —

Behind Meghan and Harry on the wall are three framed photographs by Barloga Studios. These are part of the Nest Study collection — Nest Study #11, #2 and #8 printed on English watercolor paper. The prints run $60-90 each unframed.

The studio is located in Northern California where the father and son photographers Dennis and Roy Barloga have been making photographs for more than two decades.

The black and white photographs are giclée printed on unique paper, handmade from plant bark in Nepal. Each piece of paper is unique, with slight variations in color and thickness. The photos are individually printed, titled and signed.

The other piece of decor we’re able to see is a wooden blanket ladder. While we don’t have any information on the exact item the couple own, here are some similar options —

I hate that top. It reminds me of a dress she wore that also squished her chest with a strapless bra, it just doesn’t fit well. I love her in a button down or a boat neck, those VB shirts were glamorous.

I’m also not a fan of the slick bun, I like a messy bun or pony. I like to see hair texture, slicked back reminds me of strict ballet and just doesn’t have that care free California style.

Hope we see a new pic of Archie soon, hopefully for Christmas! I’d love for it to be in color to see his hair.

Hi Jenn – The video quality didn’t help at all to show her outfit – plus, she was sitting down. Perhaps if we saw the outfit in hi-res clear images, it would given a better perspective on the outfit and the top. I too would like to see it again in a more clear view. I love monochromatic looks, I think the black faux leather trousers would’ve looked nicer. Who knows. Susan C. 🙂

I like her style, I think she’s pretty sexy and I pull back my hair in a tight bun like that when it’s starting to get greasy and I don’t want to wash it yet. I’m not saying that the Duchess’ hair is dirty! But maybe and I find her even more cool and relatable ?
She is so articulate and I love her for that ?
    Thanks for the post.

I like the top in theory, but sitting on a couch and the odd camera angle is not making this ensemble look that great. I actually love that color and like the monochrome look in theory. Maybe when standing it looks better?

I have never been a fan of asymetrical looks, so this top was never going to be my favourite. I have to agree with the colour being blah and the fit being all weird, even on (especially on!) the model. However, I hadn’t heard of the designer before so I read up about him on his website – he is Haitian born and describes his clothes as being “designed for all people, genders, races, sizes and personalities”. I think that is a really great statement for Meghan to be making with her clothing to kick off Black History Month. Just wish she had chosen a different piece!

Well I always want to like an outfit, but this one is way off to my eye. The top looks like a throwback to the early 2000s, but not in a good way. It might look different in a standing position, but for a seated interview it doesn’t work. This top needed some contrast for it to work at all. Flowy hair, statement earrings or even a loose scarf could have made this work, although I still wouldn’t love the style of the blouse.

I really didn’t like this top. It makes her body look all wonky and me not being a fan of browns as a clothing choice really doesn’t help. To include the brown pants. I did like the black ones from the other day though.

The pants look nice from what I can see, but that top is so unflattering.

The color really washes her out, the top looks like it is the wrong size and you can see where the fabric is pulling from this. I also find the style just generally unflattering and imagine it wouldn’t work on most people (especially in that color).

Thus top is a miss for me in terms of style and color. It doesn’t look any better on the model. It’s hard to critique an outfit on someone sitting static on a soda, do perhaps it would move better in a different setting. I also am getting the idea that Meghan is trying to take the focus off of her clothes in these sofa appearances? It does allow for more emphasis on her message and intent.
