Fashion Flashback Friday: Meghan’s Coats Part 5 – Dress Coats and More (Updated 12/12)

December 11, 2020 by Susan Courter 3 Comments

Welcome back for our final installment of Fashion Flashback Friday: Meghan Coats Part 5 – Dress Coats and more!

We start off with the O’2nd Grande Check Classic Coat that the Duchess wore for a July 2014 piece by retailer Holt Renfrew titled, “A Day in the Life of Meghan Markle”.

The coat is crafted in houndstooth suiting and fused jersey backing creating a structured profile. Solid piping outlines the loose-cut silhouette. A back vent allows for easy movement and hidden snaps close the placket.

See the video clip of “A Day in the Life of Meghan Markle” below.

As part of that same Holt Renfrew piece, Meghan wore a coat by Stella McCartney — the ‘Glen Plaid’ coat, $2,000.

The navy wool-blend felt coat has a darted front and back with a zip front as well as a crest snap button. A gray glen plaid trim with two high-low front zip pockets, and two side seam pockets complete the piece.

When Meghan appeared in the Canadian magazine, The Bay St. Bull (here), Fall 2015, she wore a few different outfits including this Pink Tartan – ‘Kim’ Long Double Breasted Coat Navy, retail $695.

credit: Bay St. Bull, Fall 2015

Gleaming buttons, flap pockets and pickstitch detailing accentuate the inset waist that lends feminine shaping to a menswear-inspired coat complete with peak lapels and double-breasted styling. It appears Meghan is wearing the coat as a dress.

Blazer style dresses have been a favorite of Meghan’s long before she met Harry, as she has been seen wearing the style since early in her Hollywood career. Here are a number of other blazer dresses she’s worn:

The Blue wool blend ‘Tasha’ coat from Tory Burch, $995, is simply stunning with it’s leaf-shaped sequins and wooden beads embellishments.

The coat is hand-stitched with heavy thread creating dimension and iridescent shine. Meghan wore the cropped version of the coat for a piece about The Tig on Tory Burch’s blog, August 2014. Read the full post here.

Just a few months before Meghan and Harry’s wedding, she wore the Amanda Wakeley Cream Sculpted Tailoring Crombie Coat, $1,190 for Commonwealth Day Services at Westminster Abbey, March 2018. She wore the coat again for an engagement at the Natural History Museum, February 2019.

A similar style coat to the Amanda Wakeley is this bespoke one from Givenchy that Meghan wore for Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank’s wedding in October 2018.

We jump back over to the trench look with this Veronica Beard SoCal trench vest, retail $495, featuring a long silhouette and double-breasted placket with optional belt. Veronica Beard has an updated version of the vest, the Fayette, in a corduroy fabric, $750. Meghan wore the vest for Veronica Beard’s “Movers and Shakers” blog post.

The vest features a long silhouette and double-breasted placket with optional belt.
A crisp notch lapel fronts a long, fitted vest infused with a touch of stretch and secured by a line of glossy buttons.

This next coat is from Oscar de la Renta – the cotton twill coat in Sand, retail $2,990, which the Duchess wore for one of her first appearances after her patronages were announced.

The Winser London Gillian Anderson Soft Wool Swing Coat in Dark Navy, £495, is another fabulous coat we saw on Meghan at the Invictus Games Sydney opening ceremony, October 2018.

The coat is designed with a soft construction in a double-faced specialist handcrafted wool fabric. It can be worn open or belted.

The Gucci Cape Coat is a piece worn when Harry and Meghan paid respects at New Zealand House, London, March 2019. We were never able to find a stock photo of this coat which has us thinking it was possibly a bespoke piece.

Finally we take a look at Meghan’s vintage coat collection. She favored quite a few from William Vintage.

My favorite is the ‘Glen Plaid’ coat by Stella McCartney. I also love the shoes Meghan is wearing on that photo. To be honest, I love the whole outfit! It’s just my style 🙂

I love so many of these coats, and it’s very fun to see them again. Thanks for the flashback! My favorites are the gorgeous green Erdem coat (just exquisite), the white Katherine Hooker, especially the re-wear with the white dress, and of course the lovely vintage Courreges coat.

Even when Royal, Meghan kept her own unique style- lots of sleek, clean lines and dark or neutral colors. She has great taste in coats, probably because she lived in Toronto for so long. As someone from a northern state, I can say that a good coat is a great investment, and since we seem to spend about 10 months a year in coats, we amass a large collection. 🙂

I love all of these! Thanks for doing this series, I had forgotten some of them. The Amanda Wakeley, Oscar de la Renta and the black blazer dress worn to the Hamilton show- mwah! *chef kiss* The maroon vintage and Green coat dress were beautiful textures and colors. She really looked elegant while pregnant too. Glowing and lovely..
