The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were among the 2,000 mourners at Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral this morning at Westminster Abbey—the culmination of 11 days of reverence since her death at age 96 on September 8 at her beloved Balmoral Castle in Scotland.
All week, Meghan has been wearing a pair of pearl earrings gifted to her by Her Majesty in 2018, a present to commemorate their first joint engagement together. She wore the earrings again today, as well as a black look with special meaning.

While the Duke processed behind the Queen’s coffin, Meghan arrived via car with Sophie, Countess of Wessex, wife of the Queen’s youngest son, Prince Edward.

Along with a black hat, Meghan wore a black cape dress, one of her signature styles and one that harkens back to a happy memory with the Queen: the occasion of Her Majesty’s 92nd birthday in 2018, when Meghan wore a similar dress in navy to the celebration, just weeks ahead of her wedding to Prince Harry that May.

This look not only honors the present period of mourning, but also aptly celebrates a wonderful memory with the Queen.

Meghan was seen, understandably, wiping away tears today; she similarly got emotional at a service to mark the beginning of Her Majesty’s lying in state at Westminster Hall on Wednesday, when she performed a deep curtsy to the Queen, symbolic of a lasting respect for the monarch.

Amongst the dozens of special, touching moments from today, Meghan was caught giving a smile to seven-year-old Princess Charlotte, who attended the service alongside older brother Prince George and her parents, the Prince and Princess of Wales. (Charlotte’s younger brother, Prince Louis, was deemed too young to attend at the tender age of four years old.)

Today marks the end of 11 days of fervent activity for the members of the royal family. The next seven days will continue a period of mourning to honor the life, legacy, and service of the Queen, who deserves every bit of the recognition and praise.

Rest in peace, Your Majesty.

A number of you were asking about some of the fashion style’s worn this past week and today. Here is a little more insight into why the women wore all black for the State Funeral and other events this past week.

As per Debrett’s, a chronicler of British society and modern manners, an all-black dress code must be strictly followed at state funerals. “Ladies wear black knee-length dresses, or coats, black hats, and may also wear face-covering veils,” the publisher explains. When the late Duke of Edinburgh passed, the gentlemen were seen in black morning coats with medals, instead of the traditional military attire. However, the Queen’s funeral has more stringent rules for the royal family, since the streamlined ceremony for Prince Philip was held in accordance with the UK’s lockdown regulations. Also, it’s believed the Queen changed the rules at her late husband’s funeral, so that non-working royal Prince Andrew wouldn’t stand out for not being able to wear his military uniform.
Meghan wore a black cape dress by Stella McCartney and her hat is from Stephen Jones for Dior. Her shoes are from Stewart Weitzman, ‘Tippi’ pump in black suede and it’s been reported that her gloves are by Valentino.
The dress is the black version of the one she wore in April 2018, shown below.

It is understood that Harry and Meghan will be staying in the UK until the 27th of September for the family’s private mourning period.
We leave you with this stunning photo captured of Meghan in the car and the Union Jack flag reflected in the window.

What an elegant, timeless, and meaningful look.
I’m a bit Queen Elizabeth-ed out with all the coverage and I haven’t had a chance to watch the funeral (I’ll rewatch on Youtube later this week when I have more time) but I did get a chance to watch the car procession to Windsor/the Commital Service at St. George’s. I really hope Meghan and Harry are okay, this week must have been excruciating for her and giving her PTSD/flashbacks to her treatment from the British media. Social media/British media have been ruthless to her but it also has been amazing to watch the pushback from, well, everyone that’s not the British media. It is unfortunate it took the Queen dying for people to realize the unfair hate campaign waged against her but with the international media spotlight on the Queen’s death and funeral, it’s been interesting to watch the British media falter because they realize this hate campaign isn’t sustainable anymore.
She looked appropriate and beautiful in her minimalist cape dress, pearl earrings, and hat. I am sorry her and Harry’s European tour was interrupted so harshly, but at the same time I’m glad Harry was already in the UK when the Queen passed. And I’m glad Meghan was there with him to support him through this tough time.
Well said 👏.
Beyond. Thank you for covering her. Salve during sad times.
Are the Sussex children in the UK?
LAF, if they are, they came over under the radar. We probably won’t ever know for sure. – Susan
Such a sad and historic event, but the royal ladies didn’t disappoint. It’s not hard to understand why The Duchess of Sussex was praised for understated elegance. While the pearl earrings gifted by the late Queen aren’t to my tastes, they were worn beautifully the past few days for its meaning. I’m usually a fan of more jewelry, but it was fit for today. The cape dress and hat also have meaning of their own, both worn originally to commemorate Queen Elizabeth’s life. The gloves elevated the look to a new level of elegance.
