It was announced this morning on Harry and Meghan’s Archewell site that Meghan has penned a new children’s book, The Bench. The book is about the special bond between father and son as seen through a mother’s eyes and was inspired by Harry and Archie’s own special relationship. It is illustrated by award-winning artist Christian Robinson.
According to an official press release, the book will “capture the evolving and expanding relationship between fathers and sons” as well as “remind us of the many ways that love can take shape and be expressed in a modern family.”
Here’s what Meghan had to say about the book —
The Bench started as a poem I wrote for my husband on Father’s Day, the month after Archie was born. That poem became this story. Christian layered in beautiful and ethereal watercolour illustrations that capture the warmth, joy and comfort of the relationship between fathers and sons from all walks of life; this representation was particularly important to me, and Christian and I worked closely to depict this special bond through an inclusive lens. My hope is that The Bench resonates with every family, no matter the make-up, as much as it does with mine.”
Artist Christian Robinson has worked with the Sesame Street Workshop and Pixar Animation Studios. More recently he received a Caldecott Honor and Coretta Scott King Illustrator Honor for his art in Last Stop on Market Street.

More from Mallory Loehr, executive vice-president and publisher at Random House Books for Young Readers Group via The Bookseller —
Meghan’s touching text explores the relationship between fathers and sons and undeniably tugs at the heartstrings that parents and caregivers feel. Christian’s art beautifully matches the tender emotion of Meghan’s words, and every spread is infused with a vibrant sense of joy and love. The Bench is timeless—it feels destined to become one of those books that people will be reading for generations to come.”

I love this so much! As usual Meghan announces her latest project only once everything has been complete. The illustrations are so lovely and it is very significant Meghan chose a man of color as the illustrator,
a field that is not very well-known for being diverse. I’m sure this will be a bedtime favorite with Archie, if it isn’t already (I just assume they have a copy of their own already). I hope it becomes a children’s classic and a family favorite for many. For some reason I thought June 8th was Father’s Day but it is actually not Father’s Day in the UK or the US, but it is being released just in time to be purchased before Father’s Day (which is maybe the strategy here).

This looks like a fun book for kids! Meghan is very eloquent in her speeches but can also break it down to kid level. I wish I could be as good with words as she is! I don’t have kids so I won’t be purchasing it myself, but I’m sure a lot of parents will and their kids will enjoy it.

How wonderful!
The illustrations are charming and I am looking forward to reading the prose.
What a lovely collaboration.
I’m so pleased to see her talents reflected in worthwhile projects. She is creative, hard working and has such an earnest outlook. May she and her dear family continue to flourish on this side of the world.

I love this! They have repeatedly talked about how much their family means to them and I love that she’s putting this into words and sharing that feeling with other people.
