Fashion Flashback Friday – Meghan’s Coats Part 3: Tailored Coats

November 27, 2020 by Susan Courter 8 Comments

Once again, What Meghan Wore presents Fashion Flashback Friday: Meghan’s Coats Part 3 – Tailored Coats.

Meghan’s love of Canadian brands continues starting with Smythe, a brand she has worn for many years now.

In November 2016 Meghan was spotted out in Toronto wearing the Smythe ‘Brando’ wool coat in salt and pepper. For Meghan’s first public appearance of 2018, when she and Harry visited Represent Radio, Brixton, UK, she wore the Smythe Brando coat in camel.

Meghan first wore the camel version of the ‘Brando’ while on set in Toronto filming the television show Suits, April 2016 and November 2016.

The Smythe coat is no longer available, however here are some similar style options – Uniqlo tweed coat, $99 or the Abercrombie Calf-Length Dad Coat, $144.

In April 2018 the Duchess wore Smythe’s ‘Pagoda’ Coat ($995) in the ‘Storm in Neutral’ color, as she attended the Anzac Day dawn service at Hyde Park Corner in London, England. According to the brand this is one of their best-selling coats.

The double-breasted contemporary-fitted coat is crafted in a wool stretch suiting. It features stunning shoulder detail, a high back vent, contrasting dark buttons and double pockets.

For the Together cookbook launch in September 2018, Meghan wore the Smythe button-front peaked lapel coat in Zephyr ($1195).

The gorgeous bright blue coat is done in a wool/viscose blend with contrasting black buttons and side slit pockets.

For those that favor this bright blue color we found these two options – Ann Taylor, Wrap Trench Jacket, $179 and the Appleseeds Wool Balmacaan, $85.

This next Canadian brand, Mackage, is one we’ve seen Meghan wear many times. The family-owned business is based in Montreal, Cananda and is the sister-brand to Soia & Kyo (pronounced “Swee and Keeo” for those that are not aware). For the Duchess’ first official appearance with Prince Harry in Nottingham, UK, December 2017, she wore the Mackage ‘Elodie’ military style wool cashmere coat in navy ($890). Not surprisingly, Meghan wore the coat several other times including London, December 2016 and December 2018.

Sentaler has a coat that looks very similar in style to the Mackage Elodie. It is their Double Breasted Trench Double Breasted Trench wool coat. Meghan wore the coat in the mulberry color while arriving on the set of her television show Suits, Toronto, November 2016.

The coat is crafted in wool and alpaca blend and features the Sentaler signature ribbed detail at the cuffs.

Another Canadian retailer that the Duchess favors is Aritzia. While attending a meeting at Kings College, London in December 2018 she draped the retailer’s Wilfred wool-cashmere blend long ‘Cocoon’ coat in Petale over her shoulders.

From Canada we cross the pond over to the UK to take a look at some British brands Meghan has worn and favored.

Another style that echoes the Mackage coat, is this Victoria Beckham navy wool coat we saw on Meghan for Christmas in Sandringham 2018 as well as in February 2019 when the she stepped out in New York City with friends.

Shop these similar styles –

MICHAEL Michael Kors Double-Breasted Walker Coat, $275 – NOW $99 and the Harris Wharf London Pressed wool military coat, $553 – take an extra 20% off BLACKFRIDAY20.

British brand Burberry has also played a strong point in Meghan’s fashion collection. We’ve seen Meghan wear the brand numerous times including several episodes of Suits when she played her character, Rachel Zane.

In the October 2017 issue of Vanity Fair, the Duchess wore the Burberry ‘Wool two-tone blue and black coat’.

When she and Harry visited Edinburgh, Scotland in February 2018, we saw her in the Burberry Double-breasted tartan wool and cashmere-blend coat ($2160). The coat remains a favorite among fans.

Here are some #MatchMegStyle options for the plaid coat —

The Avec Les Filles – Double Face Plaid Raglan-Sleeve Coat, $280 – Take an EXTRA 50% OFF WITH CODE BFSTEALS

Old Navy Cozy Plaid Sherpa Peacoat for Women, $75, NOW 50% Off for Black Friday.

J. Crew’s Juliette collarless sweater-blazer in Black Watch tartan, $168, is a great alternative for the coat. Take 50% OFF full price with CODE FRIDAY.

As her character Rachel Zane, we saw Meghan wear Burberry coats in season 4 of Suits.

Burberry’s cashmere ‘Northcombe’ coat in stone was worn in Suits episode 6 “Litt the Hell Up”.

The BURBERRY wool cashmere trench coat in dark grey was worn in Suits episode 15 “Intent”.

Another British brand Meghan wore more recently was Reiss – their sabel wool blend overcoat in camel ($645) back in January 2020 when the couple visited Canada House in London.

Lauren Ralph Lauren Double-Breasted Walker Coat, $340 – on sale $170 and the Uniqlo cashmere blend ‘Chester’ coat, $129.

On several occasions she wore Stella McCartney. The first was a bespoke version of a Stella McCartney coat believed to be based on a style from Stella’s A/W 2019 collection, worn to Remembrance Day services in London.

Then for a SHOUT event which was held in sometime last 2019 or early 2020, she wore the Stella McCartney floral embroidered navy coat.

This beautiful navy wool coat adorned with embroidered flowers really threw us for a loop when trying to identify. Reese Witherspoon had recently worn the coat and we thought perhaps it was from her Draper James line.

When Harry and Meghan visited Sussex, UK, just before their tour of Australia, Meghan wore this Emporio Armani cashmere double cloth coat with classic lapels.

Try the Mango double breasted wool coat, $129.

Jumping back to Suits, Meghan, er uh, Rachel Zane wore Gucci’s sleek black wool coat with faux pearl buttons embossed with the brand’s iconic ‘GG’ logo in season 7, episode 4.

Try the Ann Taylor Chesterfield wool coat, $248.

Come back again next week when we wrap up our coat series.

Really enjoyed your coat retrospective. I forgot how many great coats Meghan has worn. Wrap coats and trench coats are definitely her favorite! I wonder now that she’s moved back to CA what kind of coats she is favoring. She needed all these coats while living in Canada/the UK during the winter but how cold does it get in the LA area? Does it ever get below 50 usually?

Amelie – Well, we’ve seen her wear a short trench coat recently while out in LA, so I’m sure some lighter weight coats. However, yes, it can get very cold in California. I was there in December one year and it was really cold – I needed a heavy winter coat!
We will have a final post for the remainder of her coats this week so watch for that one. 🙂 – Susan C.

I absolutely loved the Smythe “Pagoda” coat that Meghan styled with a wide-brimmed hat. It was a very elegant, sophisticated and cozy look- one of my all-time favorites, actually. Meghan has great taste in coats- the Burberry tartan wool coat is also dreamy.

Ah! You left out one of the best ones — the swing style military navy pea coat she wore to a casual lunch in 2019. Still unidentified and it kills me because I covet it!

This was such a good post as its reminded me of so many of her great fashion moments. She wears these coats so well and I love how she puts her outfits together especially when she does a sort of monochromatic thing, like the rich brown and caramel colors worn to Canada House. So chic!

I’m a body shape mix between Meghan and Kate. Tall like Kate but high-waisted like Meghan. I have a hard time finding longer coats that look good on me because I’m high-waisted and I feel like Meghan does too. Long coats, all of them, just don’t seem to fit her very well. Some of them seem to swallow her petite frame and it looks….odd. Short jackets or just over the hip coats would look much better on her IMHO.
