Meghan Delivers Powerful Speech on Child Safety at Lost Screen Memorial Inauguration in Geneva, Switzerland

May 17, 2026 by Susan Courter Leave a Comment

This evening, Meghan travelled to Geneva, Switzerland for a deeply moving occasion — the inauguration of The Lost Screen Memorial at Place des Nations, on the eve of the 79th World Health Assembly.

The very moment the Duchess appeared, the whole place lit up. She is so beautiful and gracious. People were moved by her speech.she is very eloquent. The Mayor of Geneva thanked her for her leadership and also thanked Archewell Philanthropies for their work protecting children. pic.twitter.com/Jif8pM7mxr

Co-hosted by the World Health Organization and Archewell Philanthropies in partnership with The Parents’ Network, the event brought together WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, global health leaders, government ministers, child safety advocates, and families whose children are honoured in the memorial. Geneva Mayor Alfonso Gomez Cruz was also among those present, alongside Amy Neville, who leads The Alexander Neville Foundation and serves as an ambassador for The Parents’ Network. Her own son, Alexander, is among the 50 children featured in the installation.

The memorial comprises 50 illuminated lightboxes, each 4.5 feet tall, displaying the mobile phone lock screen of a child whose life was cut short by online harm — cyberbullying, grooming, sextortion, exposure to self-harm content. Behind every glowing screen, a face. A family. A story.

When Meghan took to the podium, her words were quietly devastating.

Behind me stands The Lost Screen Memorial,” she began. “Not statistics. Not avatars. Not data points. Children. Each name belonged to a child who was loved beyond measure. A child whose laughter once filled a kitchen. Whose shoes once waited by a front door. Whose future once felt limitless.”

She continued—

Now their faces ask the world questions we can no longer avoid: How many more millions of children will be harmed by products that, while innovative, are still designed without sufficient safeguards? When will children be able to enjoy the extraordinary potential of technology without it compromising their wellbeing?”

Meghan spoke about the role of addictive online behaviour in the declining mental health of children, noting that “children today are being shaped by systems designed to capture attention at any cost: relentless algorithms, exploitative engagement, and endless exposure to harmful content that they are not seeking out.”

Her message was clear—

These outcomes are not inevitable. And prevention begins with one simple principle: Children must be safe by design, not safe by chance.”

The memorial will remain at Place des Nations through Friday, May 22nd, open around the clock throughout the World Health Assembly, with visitors able to hear each child’s story through its digital companion experience at lostscreenmemorial.org.

The Lost Screen Memorial first debuted in New York City in April 2025 as part of the No Child Lost to Social Media campaign.

During her time in Geneva, Meghan also held a meeting with Brazil’s Health Minister, Alexandre Padilha — a physician and politician — discussing the steps the Brazilian government is taking to combat violence against children online. It was a reminder that the conversation Meghan is leading through Archewell is not just reaching families, but heads of state and policymakers on a global scale.

Meghan’s caption read—

Mama’s little helper 💜”

A glimpse inside her closet reveals a carefully edited selection of black pieces — including her Giorgio Armani blazer — and on the floor, two favourite pairs of heels at the ready: her Dior ‘Dioressence’ pumps and her classic Manolo Blahnik BB pumps.

Due to the nature of this engagement, I’ll be keeping my usual fashion breakdown brief. Meghan chose an all-black ensemble for the occasion — her Giorgio Armani blazer paired with wide-leg trousers.
